What should I do if I need to restart the server?
Since you have access as an administrative user, you can restart the server autonomously. If this is not possible, you can ask Register.it to restart your machine for you from your control panel. Informations about the server restart service can be accessed by clicking on the "Hosting e server" link of your control panel and by selecting the server for which you are requesting restart.
How much space is included in the personal backup?
You have 500Mb for a Basic server, 1 Gb for a Medium server and 2Gb for a Pro server.
How can I use the Personal backup?
First of all, you will have to choose the most ‘sensitive’ data that you wish to save externally. In the best configuration, this data should be copied in a folder, zipped in a single file whose name contains the backup date and then move them to a copy server. If the data you want to copy is still the same, this procedure can be timed through Crontab.
What are the accepted paying methods
You can purchase the dedicated server that best suits your needs for a year and choose out of 3 paying methods available that will be presented to you at the end of the purchase process:
- Credit card (in a single instalment or in bimonthly instalment)
- Bank Transfer in a single instalment
If you buy in a single instalment, you'll get a 10% discount on the price!
What operating system version is installed on the server
On Windows solutions: the installed version is Windows 2003 Server Web Edition. On Linux solutions: Debian 4.0 alias Etch.
Can I install another software program besides the one preinstalled upon request?
Having access to the server from your PC as an administrative user, you can install whatever software program you have with regular licence and personalise the software configuration of your server. Please remember, however, to always check the amount of disk space and memory still available: the instalment of too many software programs might cause loss of control of the virtual machine.
How does the network get configured, when the server is delivered?
When the Virtual Server is delivered the web interface is configured on the first of the 3 public IP addresses released. We suggest you do not modify the web configuration so as to avoid losing control of the server, which would require resetting of the entire system.
For security reasons, the non-essential systems get stopped, leaving only the lowest possible number of TCP doors (and connected services) necessary for the correct working of the server itself, open. The doors and the services enabled are shown on the Control Panel of Register.it
What happens if I lose remote access to the server?
For security reasons, once the server has been delivered, Register.it does not maintain any kind of access to the machine. In case you lost access to the server from your Pc because of a wrong web configuration or because of the installation of some software programs, the only possible option is to reset the server to its initial delivery conditions. This operation implies, though, the loss of all the data and of the software programs that were installed afterwards.
Can I install another operating system on my machine?
No, you don't have the option of installing other operating systems. The installed operating systems, however, are always the most updated version of operating systems available on the market.
What is a virtual server?
A virtual server is a system in which a single machine manages multiple Ip addresses and web sites. This enables a single machine to do the work of many servers. The way the servers are installed has been thought to always guarantee the highest security standards and the privacy of every single web site. The server is connected to the web 24 hours a day and it is hosted in the same web farm used by Dada Group.
How can I manage my server from my PC?
Linux servers are managed through ssh shell access while Windows servers are managed through Remote Desktop.
How can I upgrade the VMware Tools of my Virtual Server ?
To upgrade the VMware Tools of your Virtual Server follow the instructions below:
A) With a Server on Windows 2003 platform:
- Click on the 'VMware Tools' icon present in the System Tray (area in the lower right part of the screen beside the system clock) or on the 'VMware Tools' button of the virtual server control panel
- Click on 'Upgrade' in the 'VMware tools properties' screen.
- Reboot the Server at the end of the procedure.
B) With a Linux DEBIAN 4 Server:
- Connect to your Server via shell and carry out the following command:
vmware-tools-upgrader
This command will automatically install the new version of the VMware Tools
- Complete the installing procedure confirming the various requests.
- Reboot the Server and check the correct upgrading of the VMware Tools.
If the upgrade was carried out correctly by typing 'pstree'
the following active controls should appear: 'vmmemctl' and 'vmware-guestd'.
By typing 'lsmod' the following modules should appear: 'vmxnet' and 'vmmemctl'.
B) With a Linux FEDORA CORE 3 Server:
The Fedora Core 3 operating system is no longer maintained by the Fedora Project consequently in this case it is no longer possible to upgrade the VMware tools.
We remind you that in any moment you will be able to ask for a free replacement of your Linux FEDORA CORE 3 Server with the new Linux DEBIAN 4 Server for which you will have to carry out the data transfer on your own.
Is there anything I should be extra careful with when using Personal backup?
Just remember, when using the backup service, to make sure the procedures, if automatic, are working properly and do not occupy the entire available space, that they don’t cancel files and that they can stay on hold without stopping for time out, if the copy on filer is slow or momentarily interrupted.
How can I have my server reset to its original setting?
If you can no longer access your Virtual Server, or if you installed some software that damaged its configuration, you can request to have your machine restored to its original setting. Informations about the server restored service can be accessed by clicking on the "Hosting & server" link of your control panel and by selecting the server for which you are requesting a restore.
ATTENTION! Please remember that by resetting your machine to its original setting all the software programs, files and documents installed on the server will be no longer usable.
What are the virtual server offers proposed by Register.it?
The offers proposed by Register.it are organized on 4 different levels: Basic, Medium, Pro on Linux and Pro Windows platforms, with a progressive disc space and an available band. You can see all the details in the section dedicated to this object at the following address:
http://we.register.it/dedicated_server/servervirt.html
What is the Personal backup service?
It is practically an open space on a different server than the one on which the virtual machine is found, and it is accessible via ftp connection. This space enables you to always have a back up copy of your files or of the database you will want to back up.
What technical level is necessary to use a virtual server
You can create users, manage email services, create new sites and make one or more domains point to your virtual server by using shell or remote desktop acess. It is however necessary to have good technical knowledge and skills.
How can I manage my domains from the server?
After you have purchased the server, you will be able to access your private Control Panel, where you will find a section dedicated to the virtual server. From there, you will be able to set up the management for the domains you choose to manage from your virtual server, by following two easy steps.
Does a firewall exist on the servers?
Yes, it does. In the use handbook that you can consult by clicking on the specific link of your Control Panel, you will find information on its configuration.
